The Health Benefits of Playing Tennis
Nothing can leave you on the edge of your seat quite like an intense tennis match can. Simply cheering your favorite tennis stars on at matches already helps you burn those calories and work out your core muscles—so imagine how much healthier it’ll be for your body to actually be on the court.
Tennis combines physical activity with mental focus and is a fantastic way to stay active, improve your health and have a great time among fellow members.
Here’s how playing tennis benefits your health in a multitude of ways:
- Increase Aerobic Capacities
The constant movement and quick bursts of energy required in tennis help to improve cardiovascular endurance, leading to a stronger heart and increased lung capacity. Playing tennis can also lower resting heart rate and blood pressure, which helps reduce the risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular issues.
- Improved Metabolic Function
Another important health benefit of playing tennis is its positive impact on metabolic function. By engaging in intense physical activity, such as running, hitting the ball, and quickly changing direction on the court, players can burn calories efficiently and improve their overall metabolism.
- Mind Sharpening
A tennis match is more than just a sports game—it’s a mental game.
Being on the court means keeping your eye on the ball and your opponent; there’s no room for even the slightest distractions. So expect this sport to put your focus and concentration to the test.
Your strategic thinking skills are also bound to experience a glow-up as you assess the strengths and weaknesses of both you and your opponent. From here, you’ll learn to draw a winning game plan.
Finally, you’ll discover how emotional resilience plays a huge role in the sport. From learning how to bounce back from a day of bad serves or keeping calm if you missed the winning shot, tennis will teach you a thing or 15, 30, or 45 about keeping your emotions in check.
The Benefits of Indoor Tennis Courts
Because of all the benefits that tennis will bring into your life, it’s no longer a question of whether you should start playing tennis or not. (Because the answer to that is yes.)
Now the question is, “Should I opt for outdoor or indoor tennis courts near me?”
And if you ask us, the answer to that is—hands down—indoor tennis courts for the win. Here’s why:
- Hit the Court No Matter The Weather
Whether it rains, shines, snows, or the wind blows, the weather simply can’t get in the way of your love for tennis when it’s an indoor court.
- Don’t Sweat it Too Much
Most indoor tennis courts—like the one at our Calgary tennis club—have a climate-controlled environment, ensuring a more fun and comfortable playing experience.
From being blinded by glare from the sun to dealing with hot and humid weather, these are distractions you don’t have to worry about at indoor tennis courts.
- Don’t Have to Deal with Smokey Summers
The wildfire season in Canada brings warnings of PM 2.5, which is the particulate matter in smoke. Exposure to elevated concentrations of PM 2.5 can negatively affect both the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
You don’t want to expose yourself to these hazards by staying outdoors too long. Luckily, indoor tennis courts enable you to go about your usual fitness routine without having to worry about exposing yourself to these dangers.
